When valves are to be used on systems that produce or use oxygen, typically stainless steel or brass body material is chosen because oxygen causes iron to rust. Additionally they require special cleaning to prepare them for use. It is imperitive to remove all matter, both organic and inorganic due to the fact that all matter will react with gaseous or liquid oxygen under certain temperature and pressure conditions. In some cases, this reaction can cause an explosion. This includes any grease or rust protection coatings. Once the valves are properly cleaned they are then sealed in a bag until ready for installation. This prevents moisture or contamination from finding its way back into or onto the valve. If needed, a desicant is also placed in the valve to further combat moisture.
There are many different techniques used to perform cleaning on valves to be used in oxygen service. The appropriate methods are chosen based on the valve material, geometry, and intended application of the valve.
Commercial - Where oxygen is being used in a process. Preventing combustion is the main reason. This includes applications such as metal cutting and welding.
Critical - Where oxygen is the end product and the purity of the that oxygen is paramount. This includes medical breathing oxygen and oxygen intended for use in chemical reaction processes like fuel cells.
