{"id":1317,"date":"2012-10-04T14:29:07","date_gmt":"2012-10-04T18:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/assuredautomation.com\/news-and-training\/?p=1317"},"modified":"2023-02-14T11:15:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T16:15:13","slug":"some-determining-factors-in-valve-actuator-selection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/assuredautomation.com\/news-and-training\/some-determining-factors-in-valve-actuator-selection\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Determining Factors in Valve Actuator Selection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When deciding to actuate a valve, whether for precision process control, inaccessibility to remote areas, for emergency fail-safe requirements or because of excessive valve operating torque, it is important to choose the proper actuator for the specific application.<\/p>\n<h2>Valve Actuator Selection<\/h2>\n<p>Valve actuation can be linear, part-turn or multi-turn and can be powered by a hydraulic,\u00a0<a title=\"Electric Actuators\" href=\"\/valve-actuators\/index.php\">electric<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"\/valve-actuators\/index.php#pneumatic-actuators\">pneumatic<\/a> power source. When choosing the proper actuator for your application keep the following factors in mind.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The chosen actuator must deliver enough torque to move and seat the valve with the minimum power supply available while maintaining\u00a0 the necessary position (open, closed or intermediate)<\/li>\n<li>The chosen actuator must be capable of completing the travel (90\u00b0, 180\u00b0, multi-turn) at the required speed.<\/li>\n<li>The chosen actuator must meet the area classification requirements.(For electric actuators NEMA area classification has to be taken into consideration (Nema 4x-weatherproof, Nema 7 explosion proof)\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1318\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1318\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/RM_electric_actuators\/index.php\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1318\" title=\"RM-150-\" src=\"\/news-and-training\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/RM-150-no-handle-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"RM-150 Series Electric Valve Actuators\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assuredautomation.com\/news-and-training\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/RM-150-no-handle-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/assuredautomation.com\/news-and-training\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/RM-150-no-handle.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RM Series Electric Valve Actuators<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Valve operating forces are critical in choosing valve actuation.
